The front panel LED indicators are shown below and explained in the following table. This information can be used to check the status of the device and its connections.

Basic Troubleshooting

Power Cycle

Modem: Power cycling the modem or pulling the power and letting it sit for 30 seconds before plugging it back in, accomplishes several things.  It resets the connection to the network and forces the connection to be re-established.  It also causes the electronics and software in the modem to reload.

Personal Devices:   Just as a modem has hardware and software that needs reset from time to time, your personal devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, etc., all can benefit from being shut down completely and started back up, so the software loads fresh.

Verify cords are all securely connected

Phone:  Pull the cord out of the modem and jack, then re-seat it back in the modem and wall jack to ensure you have a good connection.  Swapping cable ends is a good practice.

Power: Verify that it is plugged in to a working outlet, has a tight connection both to the wall receptacle and to the modem Power jack.

Ethernet: Disconnect from the modem/router and device. Re-seat connections, this is a good time to swap ends of the cable.

 Filtering

Modem: needs to be unfiltered or using a filter splitter if the jack is shared with a telephone.

Phones: All phones need a filter.  Filters are available from the InterBel Business Office.  Install filters directly to the wall jack with the line cord coming out of the filter.

Other Devices:  Any device that connects to your phone line up to and including fax machines, alarm systems, etc., require a filter.   

Note: Filtering can be done at the outside NID, where your service comes into your home.  When this is the case, our technicians will inform you that filters are no longer needed or if they are only needed in specific locations.

 DSL Light

Blinking:  The modem is not connecting back to the network.  Most common causes of this are wiring issues, filtering issues or device failure.

Solid: Indicates the modem has a connection back to the InterBel network.

Wi-Fi Configuration

In order to configure the wireless settings of your Comtrend router, you will need to use an internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari.  Once you have launched your internet browser, enter the IP address of 192.168.1.1 in the address bar as seen below:

 

Once you have the IP address typed in your address bar press the Enter key on your keyboard and this will bring you to a prompt for log in credentials.

The username and password to access the router is: user

After you have entered the log in credentials, you may proceed with clicking on the Log In Button.  This will bring you to the administration portal for your Comtrend device.

Let's begin with changing the name of your wireless connection.  Select Basic from the menu on the top.  Then select Wireless from the menu on the left .  From here the wireless basic section will appear in the middle of your administration screen.  Locate the SSID section. By default all routers will be assigned a randomized SSID of InterBel_DSL_XXXX.  The XXXX will represent the last four characters of the mac address on your modem.  If you would like to change the SSID to something different, erase the text in the SSID section and type in your own custom information.  Make sure to hit the Apply/Save button to set your changes.  If you are connected wirelessly, changing the SSID will drop your connection to the router and you will need to connect to it again by selecting the new SSID in your available wireless networks.

Next let's change your wireless password. From the Comtrend Administration portal, under wireless, select Security.

This brings us to the Security section for your wireless connection.  From here, let's do some house cleaning.  Unless you have an application for WPS we will want that set to disable if not already set.  WPS can confuse things when setting up wireless security. From there select the Network Authentication type.  We recommend using WPA2 as this is the latest in authentication and is at this point your most secure option.  WPA2 requires you use a password of at least characters.  If you are unable to use WPA2 for any reason, you may select WPA or Shared (WEP) as other forms of encryption.  Once you are finished, click on Apply/Save.  Once again, if you are connected via wireless, you will lose your connection and need to reconnect to your router, this time using your newly assigned password.
